Humour in ESL teaching (Part One)

When it comes the time for us to stand in front of a classroom, we need to engage our students, to relate their prior knowledge to the new one and to create the perfect learning environment for that to occur. What can we do then? Well, there is one of several methods or tools that we can use, i.e. humour.
When we dare to use this tool in the ESL classroom, we help our students' learning process, as it helps increasing their motivation and self-confidence and creating a positive classroom atmosphere.
Together, they create a non-threatening and joyful enviroment, which encourages students to take risks and participate, because there is no fear of being ridiculed or criticised.

Now, using humour doesn't need to end in laughter, and the instructor does not need to be a comedian, joketeler, wit punster or clown, as humour emanates from normal communication.
Do not force it, just let it flow. Anyone can tell a fonney when they see one.
